Highlands - Tasmania
Mount Acropolis
The Tasmanian Highlands are very different from mainland Australia. They are an elevated plateau of open moorlands and rugged mountain ranges. Much was carved by glacial action. The front of Cradle Mountain was planed flat by a glacier. Glaciers scooped out valleys, left banks of rubble as morains and uncountable tarns and lakes.
Between 180 and 175 million years ago a huge intrusion of magma occurred. While slowly cooling underground it contracted into the characteristic vertical columnar dolerite formations - prime examples at Ben Lomond and the capes Hauy, Raoul and Pillar.
